Our Story:

In 2019 four film students, filled with the naive confidence and an idea to use their own talents and drive to support each other and their brimming ideas, met in a since demolished dining hall.

“We should start a collective,” one says to the others.

“Definitely” say the others. ‘What should we call it?’

One of them looks up at the battered red cap the first student has been wearing everyday of the four months they’ve known each other.

“Red Hat Collective?”

Four years, sixteen productions, fourteen awards, and a showcase later, we certainly aren’t naive students anymore but the name’s stuck. Today, we’re a motley group of directors, writers, cinematographers, producers, actors and more; what holds us together are the things that make each of us different. With work as broad as LGBTQ dramas, psychedelic thrillers, feminist folk horrors behind us, and a team as eclectic as our work, we’re united by a commitment to give a platform to unheard voices, support emerging talent, and create fresh and innovative work that speaks to a new world.

For us, the only way to tell unheard stories is by taking the chance on new/unheard talent. How could it be any other way? We don’t care who you are, we care what you can be. We don’t ask for permission, we do. These days, our name reminds us of the impulsive, off-beat, hopeful, ambitious, humoured, and personal spirit with which we started. And you can bet that’s how we’ll continue.
